CEC Standard 3.3
Curricular Content Knowledge
As a special education teacher, I apply general and specialized content knowledge to activities that translate into meaningful life skills for my students. Calendar time is a once daily activity, that can be connected to many state standards across a meaningful activity . Calendar time provides a great opportunity to work on many skills across ELA and math standards including responding consistently to gestures, signs, and pictures, to letter and number recognitions, and for my higher functioning students, decoding words using phonics. The objectives are differentiated so that all students may participate in the way that takes into consideration their ability level. Although there is not formal assessment besides participation, I periodically check in with students by asking questions like “what did you just circle?” and “what do you think we will do next?”. With this lesson, I am able to modify and adapt general and specialized curricula to make them accessible to my learners with exceptionalities through repetition and familiar, meaningful topics.
