Instructional Planning and Strategies
Within instructional planning, using strategies to enhance language development and communication skills is something I consider very important to practice within each lesson. I think that everything my students do is a teachable communication moment. According to the CDC, one in every seven hundred children born in the United States has Down syndrome. Down syndrome causes global delays in a child, including in their language acquisition. This paper describes language development in children with Down Syndrome, the implications of their exceptionality in an educational setting, and interventions that can be used within a general education classroom.
Studying the language development in children with Down syndrome has made me develop lessons and techniques that considers my students abilities, cultural, and linguistic factors in the selection, development and adaptation of my teaching. This by creating ideas and examples of how I can use language strategies within a lesson or as I converse with students. I believe this to be a great artifact to showcase my knowledge and understanding of students with Down syndrome, and what their exceptionality requires support wise to be successful in school.
