Learning Development and Individual Learning Differences
SIOP Lesson Plan:
In my time working in a culturally diverse community, I have found how important it is to take into consideration how language, culture, and family background influence the learning of students. In the this lesson plan, I created a learning experience that both English Language Learners and typically developing English Language Learners can actively participate in using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol Model of lesson delivery. The SIOP model is a validated instructional model that that tends to the need of English Language Learners of all culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
In this lesson, I carefully chose an Arizona content standard as well as a English Language Learners goal that would be appropriate and reachable for students at the level I observed. I thoroughly planned the anticipatory set in a way that would link to students prior knowledge, a subcomponent of the SIOP model. The guided, modeled, and independent practices all have components of of the SIOP model, you can see strategies such as staged grouping and context/ vocabulary word activities that are universal for not only developing English Language Learners, but for exceptional students as well.
For example, the subcomponent of contextualizing key vocabulary in the assessment portion of the lesson uses posters boards with vocabulary words on them, students grouped receive a piece of supplemental information (a picture/ definition/ example) and must match their information to the vocabulary words. This in turn letting all students of many different levels and development purposefully and meaningfully participate in the lesson.
